WHERE CHATTERS GO TO TALK ABOUT OFF TOPIC STUFF!
In your opinion, which series finales absolutely SMASHED it out of the ballpark? Which finales convinced you that if you ever rewatch that show on Netflix or Hulu, that you will stop with the episode right before the finale, so as not to ruin your experience?
Here are mine, based only on shows I actually watched: BEST 5. Battlestar Galactica (2004) This one might be a bit controversial. A lot of people hated the Deux ex machina ending, with the revelation that God is the one that guided them to Earth, etc...I fully understand that objection. But, for me, the final scene saves the entire episode. As you recall, the Galactica finds Earth, during the time of the cavemen. So, over a hundred thousand years in our past, as humanity is getting started...(how could the Colony have gotten lost if it was in that early stage of development, IDK)....anyways, we find out that Mitochondrial Eve, the first direct human ancestor, is actually Hera Agathon, the first ever human-Cylon hybrid baby. That is, our species, Homo Sapiens, is not actually human, in the same way the humans from the 12 Colonies were...we are actually half Cylon...an interesting twist. Some people hated it, I rather liked it. 4. Newhart I didn't watch this show regularly, but my mom loved it, and I did see enough of them to watch the finale with her, even if I didn't fully understand what was going on. And I am glad I did, because the ending to this show was absolutely genius. Essentially, Bob wakes up in character, from his previous TV show, The Bob Newhart Show, making the entire Newhart series a dream that a character from a completely unrelated show had...very meta, lol. 3. Boston Legal I absolutely ADORE Boston Legal. Honestly, William Shatner as Denny Crane > Captain Kirk. Now, this episode was nuts, even by BL standards. Denny and Alan get married...not because either are homosexual, both are most decidedly heterosexual men...but, they do it so that Alan can make medical decisions that Denny is incapable of making due to the advancement of his Alzheimers (mad cow disease). Ridiculous, but absolutely in character for both...Then, there is the takeover of Crane, Poole & Schmidt by the Chinese, who rename it Chang, Poole & Schmidt...It was a perfectly oddball ending to a perfectly oddball series. 2. Pysch You will be hard pressed to find this series in any "best finales" lists. But, if you watched the show, the finale was a fitting end, both in the plot, but the tone. They didn't write the finale any differently than they did the rest of the series, even knowing it was the finale. That is, just fits right in. Long story short: Boy gets girl, girl gets job in new city, boy and boy's best friend follow, because boy is finally capable of having a committed relationship, hijinx ensue...new city, same goofy mysteries to solve. For me, the finale to this show just WORKS. 1. Cheers The very final scene of this absolutely brilliant series, was as perfect of a sendoff as you can possibly hope for. Sam has just returned from the airport where he and Diane had decided to permanently split, and Norm tells him he knew he would return to his one true love...meaning the bar. Norm leaves, and Sam starts cleaning up. There's a knock on the door, and Sam says "Sorry, we're closed." End series. PERFECT. WORST 5. Quantum Leap The episode itself wasn't bad. Had they simply rolled the credits, leaving Dr. Sam Beckett's fate open ended, and just had him leap out, without showing who he leaps into as the subject of the next episode, fine. But, it's revealed that ultimately, Sam is the one who controls his own leaping, and that he could go home, if he really wanted to. Again, end it there, and you still have a halfway decent series finale. BUT, nope. They ruined this finale with 7 words printed on the screen: "Dr. Sam Becket never returned home." They even spelled his name wrong...SMH 4. Game of Thrones This really shouldn't be a surprise. The entire final season was a bit of a mess, and the finale was perhaps the messiest of all. BRAN STARK is the king of the united Westeros? HUH? Don't get me wrong, Daenerys had to die. She was a total bitch, a tyrant in every sense of the word...But, Jon stabs her, and her dragon just kind of looks at him...like, you killed my hooooman mom...but, I am gonna melt this iron throne instead of you, so there! The dragon takes off with her body to who knows where...But Jon can't be King, even though he is the rightful heir, because of the unsullied? Fuck the unsullied. Greyworm should have been executed too, as he gleefully carried out Daenerys' orders to slaughter a town that had already surrendered itself. 3. Dexter The entire season was kind of meh...and the series finale wasn't good...but, they had a perfect ending that they ruined by giving us just ONE more scene. So, Dexter is out to sea, to drop his sister's body in the water, who got shot earlier in the episode. There is a raging storm, and we see Dexter's boat go over a wave, and then nothing...Dexter's boat sunk, and he died, and the story was finally over, right? WRONG. Next scene: "I'm a lumberjack and that's ok, I sleep all night and I work all day." The final scene shows Dexter survived, and is now hiding as a lumberjack somewhere...WHAT THE HELL. 2. Seinfeld WOW did they fuck this up. It was a terrible episode when it aired, and it's still a terrible episode in hindsight, 20+ years later. Just rubbish. They end up in jail. Haha. The end. 1. How I Met Your Mother Before this aired, I thought it would be impossible to outdo Seinfeld's series finale for worst ever. They outdid it. Well, that is, the final 5 minutes of the episode outdid it. Had HIMYM ended with Ted meeting her at the train station, roll credits, GREAT. The entire series led up to that one moment, let's end it right there...only they didn't end it right there. They kept going with a montage showing how she got sick, how she died, and that the entire series was nothing but Ted trying to ask his kids for permission to start redating "aunt" Robin, because she divorced Barney, who the entire last season was spent around their wedding...LAME.
