WHERE CHATTERS GO TO TALK ABOUT OFF TOPIC STUFF!
This post contains spoilers. If you don't want to read spoilers to The Rise of Skywalker, STOP. GO AWAY.
You have been warned. Let me just say that I have...feelings about this film, and they aren't all positive. I have not been the biggest fan of the sequel trilogy to begin with, while The Force Awakens was an amusing and entertaining basic reimagining of A New Hope, The Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker have made me seriously wonder if anyone over at Disney actually cares about Star Wars as anything other than a cash cow... Casual fans are probably going to enjoy this movie. The people bitching about it are going to be diehards like me, fans who were pissed off when Disney decided to completely abandon two decades worth of expanded universe material to invent their own canon, wiping out years and years of Star Wars storytelling, only to rip off elements from those stories as they saw fit. But, if you just look at Star Wars as a neat sci-fi adventure romp, then you can probably ignore this rant entirely. First, this movie feels like the entire plot is nothing but a giant "fetch quest". If you are unfamiliar with the term, it basically means the entire plot is driven by the heroes having to travel to a planet, find an object, which leads them to seek out another object on another planet, which leads them to seek out another object on another planet, etc. Basically, the plot is "go here, find this, then go there, find that", and so on. WAY too many locations to keep track of. Next, they felt the need to completely rewrite 30 years of stories. The planet Korriban has been described as the homeworld for the Sith since the books started coming out. it's been a location in multiple Star Wars video games, books, comics, etc. Rise of Skywalker simply goes "NAH, HELL WITH THAT, here's the REAL homeworld, bitches!" They never really explain clearly how the uh...main villain, Emperor Palpatine comes back from the dead, other than "Sith powers are unnatural, deal with it, because we didn't think that far ahead in the script writing". The Last Jedi: Rey's parents were total nobodies. Rise of Skywalker: Ummm, yeah, ignore that. Rey is actually Palpatine's granddaughter! Worst, most anti-climactic final battle ever. Why didn't Palpatine just just stop using his lightning? Didn't he learn at all from his battle with Mace Windu in Revenge of the Sith? Poe and Finn are basically reduced to just being background characters almost. Oh, and Rose? After making such a huge deal about her in TLJ, she is in like one scene. BUT, we can have Lando for no other reason than to have Lando... Lightspeed skipping? Won't bore you with the details, but unless the Falcon is being chased by a TIE Advanced (Darth Vader's model) or other special edition TIE Fighter, umm...TIE Fighters don't come with hyperdrives. Entire scene was ridiculous. Stock TIEs couldn't have followed the Falcon, it would be impossible for them. Ancient Sith Dagger points the way to Death Star II wreckage that was only 30 years old, give or take. WHAT THE FUCK. Palpatine just can't help devising intricate plans and weapons that have one crucial weakness...An entire massive fleet that cannot launch without a signal from ONE specific source, that if taken out, strands the entire fleet forever? ROFLMAO This movie just tried to be WAY too many things for too many people. They didn't make a Star Wars film, they made JJ Abrams film using Star Wars characters.
